It’s October, and both Halloween and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) will be here before we know it. Many are busy making preparations for the celebrations which both begin on the 31st, picking out costumes, stocking up on candy, decorating homes, carving pumpkins, or begin to prepare the altars that will be used from October 31st to November 2nd to honor the dead. Others, Halloween enthusiasts, have already begun celebrating by watching scary movies, enjoying early candy, and visiting haunted houses. At Mancuso’s Florist, we’ve been busy preparing fresh Halloween floral designs to help spread the spirit of the season around the Detroit area from our floral shop in St. Clair Shores.
Halloween Flowers
Our favorite flowers for Halloween arrangements are sunflowers, roses, and fall mums. These make any Halloween arrangement perfectly spooky thanks to their wide variety of colors and variations. For example, our Cute N’ Creepy arrangement features orange roses and daisies, yellow roses, and green button chrysanthemums. Fall foliage in similar hues and the arrangement’s contrasting black container and cute, fuzzy black spider make this arrangement stand out.
Another popular Halloween arrangement, the Spooktacular Spider, transforms a giant sunflower into an equally giant Halloween spider — complete with googly eyes! This arrangement also features a variety of orange blooms and black leaves for an additional spooky effect!
Although Halloween floral arrangements featuring only orange and black can sometimes seem plain, our Jack-O’-Lantern Blooms does orange and black right! This bold and ghoulish bouquet features rich orange blooms, such as roses and gerbera daisies, and midnight black accents. The bouquet gets an added touch of sparkle with glittering miniature pumpkins, gleaming berries, and satiny black leaves.

Day of the Dead Flowers
The most popular Day of the Dead flowers used for celebrations are cempasúchil flowers, also known as Mexican or Aztec marigolds. These are the large variety of marigolds with extra-fluffy petals. Sometimes, paper flowers designed to resemble the cempasúchil’s large pom-poms are used, too. If this variety of marigold isn’t available, we use flowers that feature a similar style and colors. The vibrant orange color of the flowers represents the sun, which the Aztecs believed would guide spirits on their way to the underworld.
